Private Infirmary Room

Even though the door is open, Sweeney knocks on its frame before peeking in.

"Hey."

He manages a small, supportive smile while taking stock of the situation. If this is what being dead looks like here, it could be way worse. Of course, he's also hazy on the details of how everything went down with her dying, so maybe there's a range of recovery.

"Oh, hey."

She's at the point where she can sit up, so she does that, offering him a smile as she scoots backwards to prop herself up with the pillows.

"I was gonna call you after the breach, but I got, uh--"

Ulla walks into the infirmary one day looking for Tiffany. "I was wondering if you could do me a favor. I have my magic back now, if you want anything in trade."

Tiffany looks tired, but she still manages a big smile when she sees Ulla walking upright. "Hey-- congratulations. What kind of favor do you need?"

A few days after the Ordeal

It's been... a doozy of a couple weeks for everyone, but moreso for some than others. Alec hadn't been intending to fill in at the infirmary for quite as long as he had, but with some developments for them both he hadn't exactly been in a hurry to stop, either.

He turned it over to Josh at some point, and now he's trailing back for the first time to see if he can find Tiffany - and bring her the box of Little Debbie brownies he pulled out of the cabinet in his own cabin.

"Hey, chief," he offers warmly along with the junk food.

Tiffany has not been completely neglecting the infirmary, but she has been mostly neglecting it. It's a trifecta of dealing with her own death toll, wanting to touch base with all her victims first and assess their comfort levels about the idea of being treated by her, and... well. Everything with Callisto. Alec runs into her in the elevator, while she's on her way up from Zero, and she wastes no time in gratefully grabbing the box of brownies. Yes please, give her sugar.

"Jesus, thank you. How-- how're you doing? I'm going up to the infirmary right now."

[She doesn't announce herself, or give any warning she's coming, she merely turns up at the infirmary, pacing back and forth, looking...quite perturbed.]

[Which, for her, is something. She crosses her arms, stopping suddenly.]

The devil woman asked me to dinner and I said yes.

[She'd never say the words 'confusion' or 'panic', but...]

[Tiffany says, looking up from the inventory sheet that she's barely paying attention to.]

What devil woman? What kind of dinner?

There's a lot of stuff I can't tell you, 'cause it's private. But--

[She pauses.]

I don't know how to say this in a way that doesn't sound crazy. It would've sounded crazy to me when I was new, or even when I'd been here for, like, a year.

I don't want it because it'd be a barrier, like I said, and because it'd make her disrespect me, and because I'm not scared of her. Even when it's violent, I can handle the kind of thing she does way better than I could handle Stalin.

I can kind of understand that. But I'm worried you're not protecting yourself.

When the flood ends, Cal is drifting somewhere halfway between awake and not, closer to asleep than not but skimming the surface still, easily rousable, still having snatches of thoughts with no context and, moments after having them, no memory of them. Tiffany is curled up next to her where they were talking, body warm against Cal's hip and ribs, head heavy in her lap, comfortable and comforting. It took them a while to get there but Cal knows these days that she loves Tiffany like her own family, that she trusts her and in many ways needs her. Life here, as easy as it is compared to the Ark, would be much harder without her.

And then she doesn't feel the physical pull of sleep anymore, and she opens her eyes. The rest is a bit hazy but when she looks around and recognizes her warden's cabin, when she looks down and recognizes the woman asleep beside her, she doesn't feel threatened. When the distant but deep loss that a woman who wore a guard captain's uniform had honored and then bricked up to go through her day yawns open wide and festers, aches and rots right through the core of her, her breath catches before she remembers she doesn't actually need to breathe. Instead she stays very, very still.

Usually, she uses anger, uses rage to burn away the sepsis of grief. It's still there, banked for now, but there is just enough of that other woman - and enough of her shared history here, with Tiffany specifically - that tells her this is a rare opportunity, to stay, to be anchored another way for a short time. Tiffany is asleep anyway. She uses her fingers to carefully, delicately pull a lock of hair back from her face to test the theory, and then just doesn't stop.

After Callisto wakes, Tiffany sleeps for a good long while longer - nearly an hour longer, to be exact, not that that sort of exactness is likely to mean much to Callisto. She stirs once or twice, shifting against metal studs and hard bits of leather that dig into her, but mostly, she's still.

She's still when she floats towards consciousness, and when her eyes flutter open. She's still when she breathes a quiet sigh, and elects not to move.

Who's preying on the innocent?

Well, the one I'm still a pissed-off cat about is the one who goes around eating people in front of me at port.

Bad enough you're doing it when death's broken and you spring back to life unnaturally.

Now you're feeding on people who don't have that advantage. And all right, maybe the man wasn't innocent, he was pulling a knife, but I'd rather he did that then not go home at all.

Usually when someone or something she's attached to makes a sudden disappearance, Callisto responds with rage. It's easy to miss: she responds to a lot of things with rage and often violence. Maybe this time it's because she knew Astraea wouldn't be staying. Maybe it's because Astraea isn't really someone or something else, or because she isn't being magically compelled to be attached to her in the week they've known each other.

She's awake when the hyena vanishes: there one moment curled at her feet, chin delicately resting on the toe of her boot because she knows Callisto won't bother to warn her before getting up to move. Then she glanced down the hallway and when she looked back, Astraea was gone.

The next morning Callisto is lingering late after the breakfast rush, taking her time chewing through the scraps on her tray. No one is sitting with her, of course, and her eyes aren't focused on anyone or anything around her.

Tiffany had gone to bed the night before with a cockatiel fluttering around the room, and woken up daemonless. It hadn't been a surprise for her and she knows it couldn't really have been for Callisto either, but all the same, her inmate is foremost on her mind this morning - and lo and behold, there she is, smack in the middle of the dining hall when Tiffany ducks in for a late breakfast.

"I don't know if I feel different or not," she admits, dropping down across from Callisto in lieu of going to get food.

[ Dorian is capable of multi-tasking. So in between giving Lark shit for the purpose of giving him shit, Dorian shoots Tiffany a private message. ]

You seem like the only person on that clusterfuck of Lark's post who gives even the slightest damn about Carol as a person and not as a problem to be solved.

Mind if I run an idea by you? I barely know her so I've no idea if this would make things worse or not.

[ His tone may have been light and joking on Lark's post, but it's serious and, oddly enough, a little hesitant here. ]

I’m not sure if you heard the ruckus on level 5, but Shen Wei and I have Callisto here, contained.

The restrictions on her abilities failed for a short time, and she attacked me in the hallway. There is some structural damage to the ship, but otherwise, nothing serious.

I don’t know what steps you’d like to take from here, but when you arrive, I’ll leave it to your discretion.

Situation up on deck, two people down but one's healing the other. Careful where you walk, it's slippery.

Her heart isn't in the training today. She keeps glancing at the door, not expectant, but wary. She keeps looking down at her hands, then back up at Tiffany.

Finally, she's the one who calls a halt by tossing her practice sword away; she crouches beside the stream the Enclosure provided today, and splashes it over her face without saying anything. She might not have.

She cuts a look towards Tiffany. "People with influence over the lives of those on board are the people replacing them," she says, half checking that she's right, half checking to see if Tiffany has noticed the same thing.

"Like that time when my brother was here a couple years ago," she says, crouching down next to Callisto and letting the water flow over her fingers. "Yeah. I haven't disappeared without noticing, right?"

[After her talk with Dorian, and then with Kiryu, Trixie tracks down Tiffany. This is important, and she needs to tell her in person.]

[Trixie ends up finding her in a common room, one of the ones where she frequently beds down for the night. She's not asleep now - it's too early for that - but she is lounging on a couch, a book about agriculture and farming in hand. She lights up upon seeing Trixie, moving aside so that she has room to sit.]

[Tiffany hesitates, reaching out to wind her arm around his.]

I don't know how to answer that.

[Physically? Mentally? Emotionally?]
