"I found it better because I thought less. And I cared less. People treated me better than they ever did before and that was all I cared about. But then some shit happened not too long before I graduated, and..."

She shrugs.

"It's hard to stop noticing things once you've started, and I don't wanna stop, anyway. I didn't even know what I was gonna use a warden deal for at the beginning, and then I wanted to use it for a lot of things the Admiral wouldn't grant deals for. So now I give 'em to the people I'm paired with, because the deals belong to them more than me."

It takes him a long moment to sort through her answer and apply the information to his own situation. There's definitely some uncomfortable potentials in there when it comes to noticing issues and caring for others. Sweeney's really not sold on the idea of putting others before himself. He'd been forced to for so long, he's just not eager to give up his ability to not give a shit.

"What sorta things were ya wantin' that he doesn't deal in?" Best to know the confines before jumping into a contract. That's how he'd ended up here in the first place.

"Giving them to inmates who disappeared, finding inmates who disappeared, making it so inmates all get deals when they graduate, making it so nobody gets picked up if they don't want to come anymore..."

There's definitely a pattern here.

"Stuff to fix the Barge."

"Hmm." That is quite the list. Though Sweeney's not sure any of those things would be on his. Silence hangs.

"Seems like the Barge don't wanna be fixed. I mean, I know that folk want ta try, but it seems like it hasn't helped in the past." It's a simple statement, not founded in judgement, just observation.

"Like she's resistin' it. In her bones."

"Stuff has changed before. Not enough, but still. It's not impossible."

Which is the only thing that gives her some small amount of hope.

"But you're right. It hasn't helped in the past, and if we try to do anything big, we just end up making shit worse."

Now that's a little more concerning. Status quo is one thing, that can be adapted to. But knowing everyone can be punished, that's worrisome and all too familiar.

"Makin' things worse how?"

[tucky]

"Monsters, crashing, reality turning inside out..."

A lot.

"Seems like some of those things happen anyway." Sweeney lifts his brow. "Don't they?" Even in his short time here, things have gotten pretty fucked up.

[tucky]

"Yeah, but I'm talking about even worse than what happens anyway. Like a flood but turned up to eleven, you know? And they don't just stop, after a week. We've always been able to stop them so far, but..."

But at least a flood ending is a guarantee; a safety net that they can fall back on. With other things? Not so much.

[madaboutit]

"Hmm." That doesn't sound pleasant at all. "So what sorta thing ya gotta do ta stop them? If they're worse, I 'ssume ya gotta be proactive instead of waitin' them out."

Fun.

The few activities that he had faced so far had at least had an end date that didn't require effort to be rid of, only patience.

"Yeah, of course. But-- you know, it depends on what the thing is. Usually it's something that we gotta fight, or magically banish, or-- hell, just run from. Usually I do triage. Infirmary stuff."

"Right." Because of course. Sweeney sighs, thinking on the potential situations for a moment.

"How often do those sorta things tend ta come 'round?"

[tucky]

"I don't know, however often people fuck stuff up. The last one was--"

She'd been about to say the Mirror Barge, but then she pauses.

"Actually, the last one was a couple months ago, when Lawrence and I took off the door to the bar and it made time and space start going all weird. But that one was easy to fix; we just put the door back."

A sense of understanding slides over his features.

"So they're always 'cause passengers anger the Admiral by doin' shit?" Because he's not terrible bad at doing fuckall. So at least it wouldn't be his fault if shit goes sideways.

"They're not always anything - like I said, they're not floods; there ain't a pattern. I know that makes it hard to, like-- deal with. Sorry."
