[Even with the flood over, Tiffany is clearly not well: she's exhausted, broken down, and subdued. Half of her wants to climb into bed and sleep forever; the other half of her is still screaming that she should never sleep again.

But before she does either, she has one public message and several private messages to send.]

If those were really real, I guess there was only one dream about me, because I only... died once. It was at night, out in the snow, and it was cold; there was a prissy-looking blonde lady. I went after her and then she came after me.

Anyone get that one?

[She's not crazy about the idea of people dreaming her life, but if they did, she wants to know about it.]

I just wanted to say, you don't got to worry about me hurting people anymore. I got it all outta my system.

[She doesn't think about the fact that some (or even most) of the people she's addressing might not have any idea what she's talking about. She just assumes that since they're all wardens, they share most of their information.]

I didn't even do it 'cause I was mad this time; I did it because I thought it was what I was supposed to do. Sometimes… sometimes I look for messages from God too much.

[She offers a wan little smile, clearly forced.]

That guy is a real demon, though; I don't know if y'all know that. He admitted it to me himself. But I know God didn't actually tell me to kill him. I know. Maybe He didn't even tell me to kill that woman back in Litchfield, neither. I've been thinking about that, and...

[... And that's kind of off-topic. She trails off.]

So I won't do it again. No more killing for God.

[Probably. Maybe. She does genuinely mean it when she says that, but that doesn't mean that she won't change her mind later... or that she won't attack someone for completely different reasons, the way she did at least once before she found religion.

Now, though, she just shakes her head, looking down at her hands.]

It didn't even work, anyway. Nothing worked. The dreams stayed.

I broke the bed. I'm real sorry.

[And she does look sorry. In fact, she looks far more guilty when she talks about this than she looked when she talked about trying to murder Vergil. Her cabin's bed is one of the nicest things anyone has ever given her, and yet she purposefully damaged it. She's practically in tears.]

I understand if you're mad at me, but it weren't because I didn't appreciate it. I was-- I was having a lot of problems, and I needed something sharp, so I took a piece of wood off the headboard. But it still looks real nice; it's just a little banged up, is all. If I can sand it down I can fix it some, maybe.

I still love it, and I don't want you to think I don't. That's all.

[He's calmed down from when he came to see Vergil (and, by extension, Tiffany) in Zero. He's no longer angry with Vergil for ruining some calm weeks, no longer conflicted about what to do about it. But he remembers that she'd seemed scared, through all of her anger and suspicion.]

He doesn't pretend he's anything else, Miss Doggett. But he doesn't have the powers that usually has. [He's very firm on this, because while Vergil may have healed quickly, he had still been worried.] You won't try to hurt him again?

'Demon's more a biological species around here than anything. The guy I'm sleeping with is undead, and I'm pretty sure that's not actually his problem.

I realize that death seems like a good solid solution for a lot of problems, but if nothing else-- consider that on this boat? It's pretty useless 99% of the time.

[Her tone is dull and extremely resigned.]

[How the hell did Venus miss that? Still, possibly a necessary if overly harsh lesson if it'll stop Tiffany from seeing messages from God where there are none.]

Honey, there never was anything you could do about the dreams. Nothing any of us could do. Try not to worry on it overmuch.

I can't help it, 'cause now I know what this place is capable of.

And I still don't know if it was God's punishment, or just a coincidence.

[Merlin doesn't feel refreshed, exactly, for having had a sleep unintruded on by other people's deaths. There's still too much going on in his head for that. He can't shake the feeling that this was some kind of first test in his duty to Tiffany and that he's failed it miserably.

But he checks his communicator while he's fetching their morning meal, and her messages cheer him at least a little. He gathers their food and heads back down to his cabin, where she's still sequestered.]

I brought breakfast. [He shuts the door behind him.] And I saw what you said.

[She's curled on the bed she's been using-- half sitting, half lying down, communicator in hand.]

[Although he mostly looks worried, because whatever this is, he missed it.]

What happened?

There was a demon and I thought if I slayed him, I would regain God's favor and He would stop the terrible nightmares.

[That's the gist of it, really.]

They were really terrible, Simon.

[Lydia never spoke with this woman before, She's seen her around, but there are so many new people these days, she never really got the chance to get to know this one in particular.

When she starts speaking of voices in her head, of death, and dreams that show her things, well, Lydia takes an interest. While she's never believed she could talk to God before, she's experience all of those things plenty of times before. In her case? Because she's a banshee. Considering this woman wanted to kill someone for being a demon -- and according to Vergil that's what she is, too -- she doesn't think coming out of the banshee closer will be a great way to start this conversation.]

[They've settled back into their routine of daily meetings since the end of the flood. Often they don't discuss anything serious; just small talk, mostly. Occasionally Merlin will flag up something he's encountered in his picking through the Bible.

[She heard that panic across the course of the week and had almost, for a moment she actually regrets, sent one message: "I told you so." Her first terrible time on the Barge, though, had her waking up in Zero for something Syo had done without consulting her, so she stays quiet and lets the horrors run by her, records them for her future and recreates them in ways that make sense to her. She wishes she could have at least better prepated her.]

It shouldn't have had to be this way.
