[Tiffany has a special relationship with the deck. The view is at once terrifying and beautiful, and the knowledge that the ship's (occasionally faulty) gravity field is the only thing keeping her from floating away is always in the back of her mind. Sometimes that scares her away. Today, it doesn't. Above all, the deck makes her feel small - and right now, that's a good thing. She wants to get lost in the stars.

She sees Beyond, but for once she isn't chatty; she gives him a little nod and a quiet hey as she goes to sit down on one of the benches.]

[recinerate]

[beyond doesn't particularly enjoy feeling small - he had enough of that in his life before death, he thinks - but the deck is an open-air space, and after a year and a half imprisoned, both by a cell and his marred body, beyond has found a new appreciation for any open space, even one that makes him feel small.

so he comes here to think, to breathe, when the walls inside begin to close in on him. sometimes he smokes one of the cigarettes from the pack cassel gave him - like he's doing now, when he spots tiffany. he's still not skilled at smoking; he mostly ends up watching the paper burn from one end to the other. he's finished enough with this one to toss the end over the railing and shuffle his way toward tiffany on the bench.]

Are you feeling better?

[tucky]

No.

[She crosses her arms over her legs, resting her chin on them.]

Feeling worse, actually.

[recinerate]

[without asking (because what are boundaries, what is personal space), beyond hops up on the bench next to her, perched birdlike. it's a curiously childish pose for a man of his age. he studies tiffany for a moment, chewing on the end of his thumb.]

I suppose that's to be expected. Shock is common for people who've experienced such a trauma as you did.

[no, actually, people who've experienced a trauma like tiffany are typically dead afterwards and unable to feel shock.]

[tucky]

[She looks a little surprised, but she doesn't get up or shift away from him.]

Can I have a cigarette?

[recinerate]

Certainly.

[he digs the mostly-empty pack of gitanes cassel gave him out of his pocket, along with a lighter, holds them out for her to take.

and then, because he enjoys pushing buttons, testing for cracks, he adds:]

It's not as if they'll kill you.

[tucky]

[She takes the joke as a serious comment, and shakes her head.]

Nah, you know, they actually can if you smoke 'em too much. They give you cancer.

[recinerate]

I think it hardly matters if you're already dead.

[it's not so much a joke, but he's content to hammer the point a little harder.]

[tucky]

We ain't dead forever, you know.

[recinerate]

You of course would be an expert on the subject.

[tucky]

[She sighs wearily.]

You just here to make fun of me?

[recinerate]

[he shakes his head, expression serious.]

Do you think this is funny, Tiffany?

[tucky]

No. It's the exact opposite.

[recinerate]

You could have fooled me. You don't seem to be taking it terribly seriously.

[tucky]

[She lifts her head to look at him.]

You're wrong, okay? I take it really seriously.

[recinerate]

But not seriously enough to exercise more caution.

[tucky]

I don't know why you think I'm not doing that.

[recinerate]

You said you don't regret giving the inmate who killed you the benefit of the doubt.

[tucky]

Yeah, I guess I did say that. And I... I don't know her real well. But people who do know her, and people who know people like her - they're saying I probably insulted her by accident when I showed up all by myself. So I regret that. I regret thinking what worked for one person would work for somebody else.

[recinerate]

People who know her ... like the other wardens she's attacked, perhaps?

[tucky]

I don't know. In one of the cases, maybe; not in the other.

But I do know she's got people she likes. I think one of them should be her warden. You can't be a team with someone you wanna kill.

[recinerate]

There are people here who are quite concerned about your welfare, Tiffany.

[tucky]

There are people who think I'm a bad person now.

[recinerate]

Because you were killed by your inmate?

[tucky]

Because they think I fuck everything up.
