I feel it in my heart. Ain't that always how you know you love somebody?

[recinerate]

I wouldn't know.

[feelings are illogical, remember? beyond has spent a good portion of his life learning to ignore his feelings.]

[tucky]

You never loved anybody?

[recinerate]

My mother, perhaps. [he picks his head up off his knee, turns his attention to fiddling with the hem of his jeans.] She died. I was very young.

[tucky]

I'm sorry.

I hope you can find more people to love.

[recinerate]

[he nods, too uncomfortable to say anything in direct response. in all honestly, beyond is unsure if he's even capable of feeling love, or if it's even something he wants. the pain of losing his mother was not negligible.]

Tiffany, how would you feel if Lourdes were killed?

[tucky]

Terrible.

[The answer is immediate.]

It would be an awful, awful thing.

[recinerate]

Would you imagine she feels the same, about you?

[tucky]

Of fucking course. You think I don't know that already? That I hurt her?

[recinerate]

I don't doubt it. I just wonder what you intend to do to prevent it from happening again.

[tucky]

I don't think I can promise it won't, on the Barge.

[recinerate]

You can't. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't make every effort in your power to do so.

[tucky]

You ain't gonna believe me, but I kinda feel like I already do.

I was wrong about what Sylvanas needed from me, but I weren't trying to be reckless and get killed on purpose. I thought I was doing what I had to, to let her know I wasn't gonna jerk her around.

[recinerate]

But you still knew she was dangerous, yes?

[tucky]

If I avoid everybody who's dangerous, I'm gonna be hiding from most of the ship, Beyond.

[recinerate]

You don't need to avoid. Just minimize the risk. Take precautions.

[tucky]

And I thought I shouldn't do that, 'cause I thought it'd be insulting to her.

[recinerate]

Why would insulting her matter, Tiffany?

[tucky]

'Cause she's an inmate. My inmate. I ain't gonna treat inmates bad.

[recinerate]

Even at the cost of your own safety? At the cost of hurting someone you claim to love?

[he's actually getting a little angry about this. he's fairly good at hiding it, though - his words start coming out a little more flat in tone, and his jaw tenses for a moment, but he otherwise shows no outward sign of agitation.]

You needn't be a doormat, Tiffany.

[tucky]

I wasn't. I went to go visit my inmate and that's it.

[recinerate]

But you weren't careful about it.

[he's angry, and he can't quite put his finger on why he's angry about this, and that just further complicates the feelings he doesn't want to admit to having, even to himself. now he lets his anger show, by yanking abruptly on the hem of his jeans, then sitting back suddenly, crossing his arms against his chest. he sucks in a breath, then quickly exhales through his teeth.]

[tucky]

We're going in fucking circles. I don't know what you want me to say. I thought if I said, like, "Hey Sylvanas, I'm gonna come see you, but I don't trust you so I'm gonna bring a bodyguard", she'd maybe be insulted and think I was just another warden thinking the worst of her.

[recinerate]

Then I suppose it doesn't matter. A circular argument allows for no progress to be made.

[beyond might be sulking a little now.]

[tucky]

It matters. It-- it matters.

Y'all think that if I ain't agreeing with you, it means I ain't listening, but that's not true at all. I got my own opinions now, and I don't have to agree with everything y'all say.
