I'm not supposed to be a warrior. I was born a mentor. It's an arbora caste. But the colony was failing, and dying courts need warriors. It's old magic. No one knows how to fix it even though we're not in danger anymore.

You got changed from one to another with magic? Is that what happened?

Yes, and I hate it. That's my deal, getting my caste back.

I'm sorry you have to get a deal to do it.

Were you forced to fight and stuff when you were a warrior?

[mentornomore]

I don't think anyone managed not to fight, the trouble we've had the last few turns. Though I do wish that would stop. No, I'm just a terrible warrior. I lost my magic, I won't live as long, I can't have clutches... I never got along with warriors at all, before.

[Don't let him whine. It will never stop.]

Not all. If you can avoid the younger males and keep your head down... Balm's nice. Sage is alright.

Are you all named after nature stuff? Moon, Sage, Balm.

Most common, but not always. My brothers are Bell and Knell.

I got brothers too, but they don't have rhyming names.

It's hard to yell at them from a distance. Unless I just want both of them to answer.

Aw, are you the oldest? Sounds to me like you're the oldest.

Same clutch. And you don't really have to yell at Bell very often. And Knell's more likely to yell at me.

Are you triplets? Do you got the word triplets on your world?

Clutches almost always have a lot of babies.

[Which is easier than saying there were a few more stillborn. Chime was born in the early days of Indigo Cloud's curse.]

Wow. I got a big family - a lot of brothers - but none of 'em were born at the same time as me. No wonder you said everybody gets real busy when they just had a-- a clutch. Babies are a pain and a lot of work even if there's just one of 'em.

I'd know I'd never be a good teacher. I can't even visit the nurseries very long without the noise and running around bothering me.

Yeah. I know I'd be a bad mom.

That's why we have people like Bell to manage the nurseries so the rest of us can stay sane.

Does he have kids?

Not yet, though I doubt it'll be long.

[He's handsome and just generally the type, and his bloodline is almost as valuable for having been born with a mentor as Chime's would have been for being one.]

No, he's a teacher. Their job is taking care of children. The rest of us just visit the nurseries.

I got some nieces and nephews. And a half-niece; I think that's what you'd call her. And cousins. I used to babysit sometimes.

I always thought I'd maybe have kids someday a real long time from now.
