Not yet, though I doubt it'll be long.

No, he's a teacher. Their job is taking care of children. The rest of us just visit the nurseries.

I got some nieces and nephews. And a half-niece; I think that's what you'd call her. And cousins. I used to babysit sometimes.

I always thought I'd maybe have kids someday a real long time from now.

Well, if nothing's going to turn you into a kind of human that can't, you're probably alright. And there's something to be said for other people's children. You can just hand them over when they're irritating.

Yeah, I always kinda liked that part. And they ain't your responsibility. It's less scary.

Do humans not have nurseries?

We do, but maybe they ain't the same as what you have.

Where children live with teachers to watch them?

Like school? Boarding school?

Those are only for rich people where I come from. Or orphans, maybe. If they get a scholarship.

Lessons too, when they're older, yes. Though more complicated things you learn from whatever caste you're in, or from mentors.

Do any kids live with their parents?

They spend plenty of time together. There's just bowers for children in the nurseries.

So they just don't live together?

How do they look out for their kids if they don't live together? Is it not their job?

It's not like they're very far away. Most of the court sleeps in the teachers' bowers right now, since there aren't many of us.

Do they still feel like yours?

Yes. Maybe if I was used to doing it a different way?

Yeah, probably. And if I was used to your way it wouldn't seem weird to me. It's, like... culture shock now, though.

I'm getting better at it. Having Stone and Moon around you can't help knowing at least a little bit about what other people do.

You miss them a lot. I can tell.

I do, but I'm here on purpose. Home will be better when I'm me again.

Did they do the same thing you did, and switch groups?

No, just me. Moon didn't even know me back when I was a mentor.

It doesn't happen often. We had to beg at a few different courts' libraries to even prove it had happened before.
