I got brothers too, but they don't have rhyming names.

It's hard to yell at them from a distance. Unless I just want both of them to answer.

Same clutch. And you don't really have to yell at Bell very often. And Knell's more likely to yell at me.

Clutches almost always have a lot of babies.

Wow. I got a big family - a lot of brothers - but none of 'em were born at the same time as me. No wonder you said everybody gets real busy when they just had a-- a clutch. Babies are a pain and a lot of work even if there's just one of 'em.

I'd know I'd never be a good teacher. I can't even visit the nurseries very long without the noise and running around bothering me.

Yeah. I know I'd be a bad mom.

That's why we have people like Bell to manage the nurseries so the rest of us can stay sane.

Does he have kids?

Not yet, though I doubt it'll be long.

[He's handsome and just generally the type, and his bloodline is almost as valuable for having been born with a mentor as Chime's would have been for being one.]

No, he's a teacher. Their job is taking care of children. The rest of us just visit the nurseries.

I got some nieces and nephews. And a half-niece; I think that's what you'd call her. And cousins. I used to babysit sometimes.

I always thought I'd maybe have kids someday a real long time from now.

Well, if nothing's going to turn you into a kind of human that can't, you're probably alright. And there's something to be said for other people's children. You can just hand them over when they're irritating.

Yeah, I always kinda liked that part. And they ain't your responsibility. It's less scary.

Do humans not have nurseries?

We do, but maybe they ain't the same as what you have.

Where children live with teachers to watch them?

Like school? Boarding school?

Those are only for rich people where I come from. Or orphans, maybe. If they get a scholarship.

Lessons too, when they're older, yes. Though more complicated things you learn from whatever caste you're in, or from mentors.

Do any kids live with their parents?

[mentornomore]

They spend plenty of time together. There's just bowers for children in the nurseries.

So they just don't live together?

How do they look out for their kids if they don't live together? Is it not their job?

It's not like they're very far away. Most of the court sleeps in the teachers' bowers right now, since there aren't many of us.
