All right-- because of an incident a while ago involving the pool, a loose rabbit, and some beer, my warden's just a little bit disappointed and exasperated with me, I think. We'd been talking about how he wants me to keep busy by getting a job and finding a subject to study, but he's given me a deadline now, so I'm-- I'm taking suggestions. He says I can't work in the chapel, but I was wondering... I mean...

[She trails off, frowning.]

… Hey, is it just me, or does it seem like there's a lot more people talking over this thing today?

It was for the best really. [She looks thoughtful for a moment, her smile so much softer.] He's a lot happier now.

[So is Kieren. And so is she when she thinks about it.]

"Better as friends" type of thing?

Yeah. He's a real good friend.

[And that's a fact. Simon couldn't love Amy in the way she needed exactly, but he could love her. And really, she couldn't ever ask him more than that.]

Um... he ain't my best friend here, but he's still one of the tops, I think.

What tops are we talking about here? Five? Ten? [She leans in a little.] Hundred?

[Better not be hundred!!!]

Five. Yeah, definitely five.

[Very good.]

What about top three?

[tucky]

I think that's two other guys and a lady.

Well, as long as he's in the top five...

[She nods. Amy will allow it.]

Uh-huh, he is. He and my warden are four and five. ... No particular order.

[aunaturale]

Tell him he's four then. I'm sure that'll brighten up his day.

But I can't make my warden my least favorite of my favorites. That ain't right.

Maybe they can just be tied.

[aunaturale]

[Amy looks thoughtful for a moment before she nods.]

That sounds fair, I think.

[tucky]

Yeah.

I don't really put people in ranks like that, anyway.

[aunaturale]

Probably best not to. That could get a bit sticky if you're not careful.

[tucky]

You think they'd get jealous of each other?

[aunaturale]

Course they would!

[She says this like this is the most obvious thing in the world.]

Why wouldn't they get jealous over which one you like best?

[tucky]

[She is going to take that as a compliment; an insinuation that she's so cool that people would be clamoring to be her favorite.]

I guess it might be Iris. Or... well. I don't know. I guess I don't actually have one favorite.

[That is 100% the right implication. Sure, Amy barely knows her, but if Simon likes her well enough that he's managed to make it into her top five? She can't be bad, that's for sure. Definitely one of the better living.]

Can't say I know her, but I'm sure she'd be flattered to know she's your might-be favorite.

Well, you probably don't know many people at all if you ain't really on the Barge. But everyone likes her.
