[It's Christmas, Barge residents. And as it happens, one of your new arrivals is a Christmas angel.

Well, okay, she's just dressed up as one. Interestingly enough, it was Christmas on her world too, and she just got done performing in a Christmas pageant: she's wearing a white costume robe, and has a tinsel crown on her head. The front of her robe is bloody and dirty, and torn in a few places-- and given how beat-up and damaged her face looks, it's probably safe to assume that at least some of that blood is hers.

Currently she's wandering into to common area on level 6, a bit unsteady on her feet. She's also filming herself, because she found a fancy phone so why the hell not. Soon enough she stops walking and poses dramatically, arms held wide.]

Be not afraid-- for behold, I bring good tidings of... of, uh...

[And then she collapses. So yeah, that's a thing that's happening.]

[Venus doesn't greet every new arrival but then, most don't arrive in such a dramatic fashion. Anyway, the poor girl looked like she'd been through a terrible experience and Venus felt it was only right to make sure she was doing okay.]

Hello, darling. Are you up to receiving visitors?

[She sits up on her elbows in her clinic bed-- she's still sore and a little shaky, but she manages-- peering at her new visitor.]

I think so. You here to see me?

[Said in the tone of someone who does not often get people coming to see her, no matter what the situation.]

Yes, I am. [Venus pulls a chair over next to the bed and takes a seat.]

I'm sure the medical folks are taking good care of you but being brought onto the Barge can be terribly disconcerting. I just thought I'd drop by, answer any questions you might have.

Well, I don't mind saying, I got a lot of questions.

[She doesn't even know where to start, really.]

Why's it called the Barge?

That's only natural. It's not every day you end up on a prison spaceship. At least, not where I come from it isn't.

[She laughs.] Well now, you've stumped me right off the bat. I suppose it's because we have to call it something and no one seems to know what the ship's real name is, assuming it has one.

You mean it ain't on your...

[She trails off, gesturing to her own ID badge from Litchfield Penitentiary, which is still pinned to the front of her angel costume.]

No, we don't wear nametags. Or uniforms. Admittedly, that can make it difficult to tell the inmates from the wardens but I suspect that's the point.

[That sounds like a weird point to her.]

Then how do you know who to listen to?

Which are you?

[There are many weird points on the Barge. Best get used to it.]

If you mean who should you take orders from, well, you'll learn quickly enough. In a more general sense, however, I believe it's worthwhile listening to everyone. Just because a person is an inmate doesn't mean they don't have something valid to say. And being a warden is no guarantee they're always right. It's a good idea to learn to tell the difference.

Forgive my lack of manners. [She offers her hand.] I'm Venus, and I'm a warden.

Yeah, I know all that. I been in prison before so I know how it is.

[She looks even more surprised when Venus offers her hand to shake. Tiffany doesn't know many hand-shakers in general-- it's such a formal gesture-- and she's never met a guard who would shake an inmate's hand. It's a gesture of respect; something that would indicate they were on the same level.

After a few moment's hesitation, though, she does lean forward to awkwardly shake the woman's hand.]

You don't seem like a normal guard. You some kind of therapist or something?

So I assumed. [She nods at Tiffany's ID badge.] Your previous incarceration may actually help you adjust.

[Her handshake is firm but gentle, just one light squeeze before releasing the girl's hand.] Oh, honey--there's no such thing as a 'normal' guard on this ship. But to answer your question, no, I'm not a therapist. [Not in the sense to which Tiffany's referring. Venus would classify a great deal of her occupation back in Charming as therapeutic however.] I'm just a small town girl who got offered a chance to come make a difference.

So am I. From a small town, I mean. Country.

You know about all that stuff here? Do you got our files and everything?

Whereabouts are you from? I detect a bit of an accent but I can't quite place it. [This from a woman with a generic and unplaceable Southern lilt.]

Only your warden will get your file, and the Admiral will choose your warden. The rest of us, we know who the inmates are but not why they're here, not unless they choose to tell us.

South of Pennsylvania; Waynesboro.

What do you mean, my warden?

[This place is different from any prison she's ever been in, or heard of-- it seems like everything anybody tells her raises a question or two.]

Afraid I'm not terribly familiar with that part of the country. I've spent most of my life on the west coast.

Oh, every inmate gets one warden, and every warden gets one inmate. Any warden can step in to deal with an inmate who's causing trouble naturally, but for the most part you'll be working one on one with the person assigned to you.

I get one person, all to myself?

[Very, very weird.]

What if they hate me?

[Venus pauses, frowning slightly. That's a question she hasn't considered before.]

Do you think that's likely?

Everybody's got people that hate them. And I got people that have it out for me, yeah.

No one is universally loved, no, but presumably the Admiral won't match up people who are going to be completely incapable of getting along. [Or so she hopes. She has yet to find out for herself.] As long as you're willing to make an effort, I think you'll be fine.

[She gives a half-hearted little shrug.]

There's people here trying to mess around with me already. Telling me I'm dead.

I'm sure that's upsetting to hear but it's true to a point. All inmates are brought here at the point of death, however you're not dead here and now. You've got a second chance.

Not "here and now". What's that supposed to mean? I'm dead somewhere else?

Back home, yes. Whatever fight you were involved in most likely did not end well for you.

If I'm dead, I'm going to heaven. This ain't heaven.

No, it's not even close to heaven. The fact you're here would tend to indicate that heaven wasn't in your immediate future however.
