[It's Christmas, Barge residents. And as it happens, one of your new arrivals is a Christmas angel.

Well, okay, she's just dressed up as one. Interestingly enough, it was Christmas on her world too, and she just got done performing in a Christmas pageant: she's wearing a white costume robe, and has a tinsel crown on her head. The front of her robe is bloody and dirty, and torn in a few places-- and given how beat-up and damaged her face looks, it's probably safe to assume that at least some of that blood is hers.

Currently she's wandering into to common area on level 6, a bit unsteady on her feet. She's also filming herself, because she found a fancy phone so why the hell not. Soon enough she stops walking and poses dramatically, arms held wide.]

Be not afraid-- for behold, I bring good tidings of... of, uh...

[And then she collapses. So yeah, that's a thing that's happening.]

So you don't know what I did? Anything?

I only know what you've told me.

Do I have to tell you more?

[Her tone is slightly resigned; she fully expects the answer to be "yes".]

No, you don't. Hell, you don't have to put up with me at all. You ask me to leave and I will. As long as you're not doing something you shouldn't, my authority over you is limited.

[This is so weird, and so completely not what she's used to. Guards who don't know about prisoners' histories? Guards who say you can tell them to leave, and who claim that they'll actually listen? Guards who openly admit that their authority is limited?

Hot damn.]

What am I not supposed to do, 'cause in my old place telling you to leave would be doing something I shouldn't.

For now, the rules are pretty simple: no fighting, no stealing, no vandalism.... Basically anything that would get anyone in trouble anywhere. Behave in a civil fashion and you shouldn't have any problem.

What if they deserve the fight? Like what if they're asking for it, or you need to defend yourself?

If they're 'asking for it'...just say no. Say no and walk away. If someone comes after you, then run away. Or call for a warden. There's usually one around--our living quarters are mixed right in with the inmates' cabins.

That's just gonna make them think I can't take care of myself.

This isn't a normal prison--you don't have to prove you're the toughest bitch on the cell block to survive. And if there are any inmates dumb enough to think that way, well, they're not the kind of people whose opinions you should worry about.

[She crosses her arms.]

Are you calling me dumb?

How did you get dumb out of what I just said?

You said it yourself-- "If there's anyone dumb enough to think that way".

I was referring to the other inmates, the ones who've been here a while and who should know better.

[She still looks skeptical.]

So, what. This is just a big happy group of prisoners where everyone walks away from fights?

It's not perfect, no. People are people after all, but most of the inmates do try to work within the rules. [More or less, depending on the inmate.]

And how do you know they don't just hide all the bad stuff from you?

I'm sure they try. Sometimes they probably even succeed. The thing you should keep in mind, however, is that there are more wardens than inmates. Chances are good one of us is going to find out.

What if some of 'em know and are okay with it? I seen it happen.

I suppose it's possible. The wardens aren't perfect, though, again, with so many of us around we kinda have to watch our Ps and Qs. [Venus does at least. She doesn't want to mess up before she even gets her first inmate.]

So you ain't corrupt, even if some of the others might be.

That depends on your definition of corrupt.... But no, what I'm saying is the wardens I know are decent people. I'm merely allowing for the fact that no one is perfect.

Listen, you'll see for yourself just as soon as you get out of here. This really isn't a bad place.

No, you didn't, but I got the distinct impression you're expecting the worst. [Which is not unexpected for someone who's been in the system.]

Yes, you'll have more privacy and more freedom here. Not total freedom of course but you'll be given the space with which to redeem yourself...or not.

[She just shrugs. She pretty much is, but she also keeps being pleasantly surprised.]

What happens if you don't think I redeem myself? I get kicked out?
