There's a lot of inmates that I care about a lot. Way more than there used to be, 'cause I hated other inmates when I was one. But when I think about getting paired with any of 'em, it don't seem right, 'cause they ain't you.

[And as much as she wants to do right by Pietro, as much as she likes Lloyd, as much as she loves Roderick... she feels herself click with Lourdes in a warden-inmate way (or what she imagines to be a warden-inmate way) in a way she doesn't with anybody else. Already she sees them as a team - not as a superior and inferior, or as a guard and prisoner, but as two equal people who are inextricably linked, and are tasked to help each other out in any way that they can.

Tiffany absolutely thinks that they should be paired. She just wishes that they had some say in whether or not they would be, because she fears that they won't.]

[gulosity]

[She's quiet for a few moments, thinking about this. It seems frighteningly intimate, and she's still afraid of Tiffany a little bit, wary, untrusting. But she's not wrong.]

I try not to think about getting paired up at all.

Why?

[Because it's a scary thought, Tiffany assumes, but she doesn't want to put words in Lourdes's mouth.]

Because I don't want somebody having that kind of power over me.

Well, fuck wardens who'd use it against you. I mean it, fuck 'em.

[gulosity]

They wouldn't be able to help it. You wouldn't, either.

Why not? I ain't saying you're wrong, but maybe if you tell me how it could happen, it'll be easier for me to make sure I don't do it. With you or whoever I get.

[gulosity]

There's no way to get out of it. The warden always has more power, just because they're a warden. That's just how it is.

[tucky]

Yeah, I know. I'm talking about getting out of using it against people, though.

[gulosity]

And I'm telling you there's no way.
