I need to go to Zero. Right now.

[There's the sound of hurried footsteps in the background; she's on her way to the stairs.]

I didn't do nothing and I don't plan to, but I have gotten confirmation that the demons and dark creatures here are after me. I ain't crazy or imagining things, and I ain't looking for signs and messages when there aren't any-- I got told straight out by Doctor Facilier that I pissed 'em off and I'm a goner. I don't know if any place is safe for me now, but I heard Zero's better than most.

[She takes a moment to catch her breath; she's still half-running.]

Please let me down. I wouldn't ask if it weren't an emergency; more important than life or death. It's not my body that's at stake, it's my immortal soul.

[She turns off the public feed and records a series of private messages, partially intended to be goodbye notes if things go badly. She knows people come back from the dead-- but she doesn't know if they come back from having their souls corrupted by creatures from hell.]

I'm gonna have to miss therapy for a while, I think. Unless you can come down to do it.

I know lots of people don't like you, and maybe some of 'em have good reasons; I don't know. But you were good to me and I think a lot about the things you said.

You were the first person here who was as nice to me as you were, and that will always be real special to me. For as long as I live, I will never forget that you saw all I was but still liked me anyway. You were right about all the ugly stuff in me, but I been trying to be a little better, and that's because of you.

I need your help-- please. Please. I don't know what to do. Is there a way to get rid of them? Can we cleanse the ship?

Can you come and visit me sometimes? I think I might be down there for a very long time, and I'm gonna miss you. More than anyone, maybe. If something happens to me, I want you to know that some of the people here have been nicer to me than anyone's ever been, and you were a real big part of that. And I didn't end up hating the Barge, even with all the terrible things.

In case I don't see you again for a while, or in case they get to me, I hope you don't forget what I said about you being good and being worth a lot-- 'cause I meant every word. You are the best inmate here and one of the best people too, and I won't forget all you did for me.

I'm sorry. I tried. I didn't go after 'em again, but they found me anyway. I wanted to do right by you, I really did, but I don't know what's gonna happen now.

[Less than she seems intent on believing it is, but he takes her point.]

I have magic. It's easier for me to take care of myself.

It must be nice, having that.

[He shrugs.]

I can't know. It's just been who I am, all my life.

But does it feel good to use it?

[It used to.]

It feels good to use it to help people. But it feels good to use my hands or my voice for that, too.

Is that what you do in the infirmary? Or do you use magic in there?

Both. I know plenty of healing magic, but I have other skills I learned from the physician at home. And I'm learning more from Doctor Cambridge.

You think he'll mind me working in there? Because I'm not a doctor?

You won't be asked to do anything that would need the kind of training he and I have. I don't see why he'd mind you helping me.

[He glances at her.]

But everyone has to feel welcome there. Even the people you don't like, or the people who you feel threatened by. If you can't manage that, you won't be allowed to stay.

[She looks at him very seriously.]

I can.

I want to learn that stuff, for real this time.

[He nods, equally sincere.]

Good.

[He could teach her a lot about how to be pleasant and respectful to people you hate, people who frighten you. He just doesn't think it's a good lesson for her to learn.]

So can I start soon? Real soon?

[She's actually a little bit excited.]

I don't see why not. I'll have to check with Doctor Cambridge, but so long as he's alright with it, I don't see why it shouldn't be in the next week or so.

[Her enthusiasm makes him smile, though he needs to point something out:]

I should warn you, it might get dull. We don't have very many patients.

So what do you do all day?

I read, mostly. [He smiles self-effacingly.] I meant it when I said that I don't understand how televisions work. I've a lot to catch up on.

I can show you, if they've got a television in there. It's real easy; you just have to know what buttons to push.

No, not that part. I can more or less manage pushing the buttons.

[Though he let Tiffany do most of the work when they had their movie night in the common room.]

I mean...what makes the image appear on the screen. What creates the sound. How those silver discs can hold so much information.

[She frowns, not understanding.]

Oh, you don't have to know that to watch it. I don't know how it works, either. Most people don't.

I'd like to try.

[He hesitates, trying to explain his own sense of helplessness when he's dealing with the modern age.]

You've grown up with these things, Tiffany. They're all around you. But it's all completely new to me. Electricity, and computers, and...being able to record a sound, or an image, as it would look in life.

I want to understand the world you live in. It would be a disservice to you if I didn't.

Well, I ain't like a... TV repairman, or anything. It's okay if you don't know some of that stuff.

[He smiles and ducks his head briefly.]

It's not just the televisions. It's everything. The history, the culture. It's all strange to me.

... I don't know a lot about that, either.

However much or little you know, it's still...infinitely more than I do.

...And it's not as if I don't want to know. It's not something I'm forcing myself to do.

Well, I mean... I can answer questions if you want me to. I can try, anyway.
