[It's Christmas, Barge residents. And as it happens, one of your new arrivals is a Christmas angel.

Well, okay, she's just dressed up as one. Interestingly enough, it was Christmas on her world too, and she just got done performing in a Christmas pageant: she's wearing a white costume robe, and has a tinsel crown on her head. The front of her robe is bloody and dirty, and torn in a few places-- and given how beat-up and damaged her face looks, it's probably safe to assume that at least some of that blood is hers.

Currently she's wandering into to common area on level 6, a bit unsteady on her feet. She's also filming herself, because she found a fancy phone so why the hell not. Soon enough she stops walking and poses dramatically, arms held wide.]

Be not afraid-- for behold, I bring good tidings of... of, uh...

[And then she collapses. So yeah, that's a thing that's happening.]

Well, when you get the chance. In the meantime, [he shrugs a shoulder], whether you believe me or not is up to you.

[Just, you know. Most things.]

[He holds his hands up slightly.]

I don't blame you for it. It's smarter to be skeptical.

That's right.

[She nods, satisfied.]

But say we are in space. Where's the air coming from?

Life support systems, I'd imagine.

[He hasn't been down in the engine room and has no intention of it. It's just a highly educated guess.]

So we're all astronauts now?

I suppose it does, [he says with a very light smile.]

[She shakes her head slowly, still taking this all in.]

-- Hey, is my sentence still the same?

It doesn't work like that here.

Is it longer?

Could be. Could also be shorter. Like I said, this place doesn't work like that.

You're an inmate, but there's no one particular thing you did that landed you here and you don't have a sentence.

That don't sound like a prison. It sounds like a kidnapping to me.

[Most of the inmates are actually dead, so he doesn't know if he'd really classify it as a kidnapping so much as a detour. Purgatory seems a little more fitting. But all of that seems like far too much to get into with her, so he lets it lie.]

It's a little bit of both.

And I don't get another trial? Do I get to talk to my lawyer? I got a good lawyer. Does he know I'm here?

[Philip shakes his head no.]

There's no trial. No lawyers.

But those are required. They're our rights.

[Philip laughs a little and shakes his head. Another person from a world where things like that existed and mattered at all.]

You might find yourself with more freedom here than you're used to, but you don't have rights. The sooner you realize that, the easier things will be. The quicker you'll adjust.

No, I still have rights! I'm still an American. Being in prison don't change that!

[Getting a little agitated over in her infirmary bed here.]

[She's free to get as agitated as she wants as far as he's concerned. He's not here to hold her hand or tell her it's going to be alright. She'll either eventually suck it up and move on or she'll dwell on it and add to a long list of things to be miserable about.]

If we were in America, I'd say you have a case. But we're not. And to some folks here, America doesn't even exist in the first place.

[Or, in his case, ceased existing not too long ago.]

I'm still a citizen, and I know that counts for something.

[Maybe.]

It doesn't.

I want my phone call! I need to talk to my lawyer!

[Haha, nope. He's not dealing with this impending meltdown even a little bit. Some other unlucky son of a bitch can. He turns to leave.]

Take it up with a warden then. They'll tell you the same.
