You know, I been wondering. If a girl gets pregnant and kills the baby, how many of y'all consider that murder? It's a real... hot-button issue where I come from, I guess; it's a big deal. There's people who feel so strongly about it that they believe the ones who actually do it - the doctors and stuff, and the people who work for 'em - deserve to die too. And it happens. People will go in and kill somebody like that, and other people will celebrate.

But then there's other people who say it ain't bad at all, 'cause we got rights to our own bodies and nobody should try and take that away. That's sexual liberation, and it's the same thing that says girls should be able to have a lot of sex and not get called sluts and whores. I always liked that part, at least, 'cause I been called those things before and it makes you feel dirty and small. But I knew guys who had way more sex than I did, and they never got called shit. Ever notice that? It's weird, how that happens.

And then there's the whole issue with condoms - which I use now, mostly, when I remember, so I don't need another lecture about that; don't worry. If you're gonna have sex, you're supposed to use 'em, or you end up with that problem I already talked about. But condoms are a real pain - they ain’t sexy or romantic or anything like that. You got to stop and put 'em on, and then you can feel 'em, and… I don’t know, I just like it better without. And I bet I ain't the only one.

It's confusing to think about; all of this is. But it's all tied together.

[warden filter]

I'm sorry for flipping the bird on the warden filter last week. I was mad and I'm still a little mad, but I think I do trust y'all, and I would like my actions not to be held against me. Please. Thank you.

I don't believe anyone should need to 'ave a thing growing in 'er body if she's not willing. It's your body. A child 'as to drain the calcium out of your teeth and bones to grow and that's not even touching the whole giving birth lark.

It's easy for me to say, mind. I can't get preggers by accident. I just don't think anyone should ever 'ave to go through it that doesn't want it.

I've never been religious, and I don't want to disrespect it. Looking from outside, though - most religious rules got made for reasons. Like the Earth religions that ban pork? Those all started up in a bit of the world where pigs can catch parasites deadly for humans. Most of the rules about sex 'appened to protect family property.

I don't know, is the short answer. There is real power in religious faith, I've seen and felt it. But I'm pretty sure I don't believe in hell.

[Consider his eyebrows raised.]

Couldn't you go on the pill instead?

[Someone has never bothered with condoms, whoops.]

In the Mortal Realms of my world those women who cannot use an amulet to prevent pregnancy for whatever reason usually sell their children. It is difficult to say which is worse: slavery or death.

[Well, that's not a comfortable topic. He has every intention to ignore it, but hold on. That one part sounds funny.]

You need a doctor for that?

[Yes, this is a serious question.]

Hm.

[Thinking this over seriously. This might be the first time he's had to ponder reproductive rights. (Possibly this is why he has a child in Kuala Lumpur.)]

I bet they'd be free here, if you're worried.
mercurialize: (Wait I can explain)

[Maybe he's missing something.]

But what? Other ways are more expensive or?

Some do. The ones who are less interested in being paid for their troubles.

Diseases?

[A skeptical shrug. Guess who lives in pre-pandemic times?]

Dangerous?

[Well, maybe if you're really dumb about it, he thinks. Belatedly, it occurs to him.]

Miss Doggett, have you ever heard of tansy tea?

You're not going to catch anything a course of antibiotics wouldn't clear up.

[Which used to be true.]

The lengths to which slave owners go to keep their charges from killing themselves is rather telling.

I do not believe the Great Mother Goddess holds it against her daughters if they choose to end a pregnancy before it has come to fruition.

I suppose so.

[Shaking his head, as he realizes how long it's been since he thought of taking someone home. Bowing out of this discussion now.]

Hey, how've you been?
