Hey, y'all. I been thinking about some stuff lately - about powers. I don't have any and I never did, except for Admiral powers and except for one time when I thought I had some of my own - but that's another story.

They're just kinda all over the place here, I noticed. Arthas had his, and he tried to kill the whole Barge. And I know wardens hurt people with their powers sometimes. I've seen it. And we got inmates who don't have any powers at all, but still hurt and kill people. It's like I was telling someone earlier - it ain't like the Barge is safe when inmates have powers, and dangerous when they don't. It's a lot more complicated than that.

I got two inmates I been talking to, Lourdes and Pietro - and they want their powers back 'cause they don't feel right and whole without 'em. And I don't blame 'em, if I'm gonna be real honest. I maybe would have, before I was a warden, but now I got a different perspective. We're letting parts of people be locked away, and how's anyone supposed to trust us if we do that and don't care?

But maybe it ain't right to just give 'em back without thinking about it, neither - 'cause some of the powers are dangerous, and all of us'd be affected if something happened. So we decided that since they don't got wardens of their own, we're gonna talk to the whole Barge about it and see if any of y'all got objections. Or-- or questions or concerns. Stuff like that.

Pietro's got super speed, and super senses so he can see things okay when he's using his super speed. Lourdes can control people's bodies, and their minds, and even the chemicals inside 'em. Now, that's a whole fucking lot - so she's mostly what I wanna talk about today, I guess. We got Iris and Jean and all those guys who can protect people from stuff like that, but it can still be dangerous. So we're asking you.

I'm giving Lourdes her powers back - but only when she's in the Enclosure with me. Now, I don't think she's gonna hurt me - but if she does, I don't want any of y'all hurting her back, okay? I ain't saying no punishment, or no being mad. Just no torturing or murdering or nothing. Thanks.

[She's been lied to and used and betrayed; he'll never forget the look on her face when she realized what Okoya was feeding her, what she was addicted to. It's not the same, but it wouldn't matter to her now, it'd hurt the same way, it would wreck her, and she'd hate so much more for being made to hope. Sometimes. Sometimes when you make a promise, you just have to see things through and pay the price.

I won't - I really won't. Don't worry. I wasn't thinking about it, not even a little bit; not even when he was saying it was a mistake and I'd regret it and looking at me all disdainful and disappointed-like.

You believe me, right? You believe I wouldn't do that to her?

[Tight and relieved at the same time.]

Maybe it was messed up to make all the wishes you did and maybe it will cause problems later but - she needs you right now. And you're honoring that.

This guy said I was being proud, when he said I had to tell the Admiral to take it back and I said I wouldn’t. I think he thought I just didn’t want to admit I did wrong. But it’s not that. And it’s not just about the powers, neither.

[Tiffany knows some of Lourdes’s history, but not all of it, and not nearly as much as Dillon. But based on how she acts and talks, she’d come to the same conclusion that he had. Giving this to her and then taking it away - even with apology, even without malice, even for the sake of Tiffany’s own future inmate - would be immeasurably cruel.]

And I do feel bad, ‘cause he was right about it maybe fucking over whoever I get paired up with. But if I was back there talking to the Admiral right now, I’d still make the same choice. Is that an okay thing to do as a warden? Putting someone who’s right there with you first, instead of thinking ahead and putting my inmate first? My inmate who I don’t even have yet.

I don't know. I know it's what I've tried to do - help whoever was in front of me. And sometimes that's had consequences too, but - you also have to, you know? If you can ignore it now, why not forever? Or only if it's about your own deal, that's not about them, then, is it, then it's about you.

Not planning ahead at all is one thing, but. It can't be a bad thing to help someone who's suffering. I can't believe that.

You're never gonna do something everyone approves of. And that's okay. But if your inmate does need something, you know I'll help you any way I can. And I'm not the admiral, but.

But I owe you, too, because it's for her, and she needs it and I need her, and I can't be it for her. You know? So - you got me, is all. Anything you need.
